Dickie Gene Stock, 88, of Greeley, Iowa, died on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, working in his garden at his home, doing what he loved.

He was born on January 25, 1931, near Manchester on the Charlie Cowley farm, the son of William and Blanche (Davis) Stock. Dickie resided with his parents until 1940, in the Manchester and Masonville areas where he attended school. At the age of nine, he was fostered to the Reverend Howard and his wife Margaret Robinson in Greeley. Dickie was baptized in Upper Elk Creek during his stay with this family. Then he lived with several other Greeley area families, including: Ed and Pearl Robison, Emmet Kauffman’s, John and Margaret Harris, and John and Clara Burbridge, until his graduation from Greeley High School in 1949.

After graduation, Dickie was employed as a farmhand by Charles Wiley, Gene Whitehead, Ray Wulfekuhle, and John Burbridge. He also worked for Iowa Electric as a lineman until his induction into the US Army in 1952. Dickie served honorably for two years in 11th Airborne Division, 76th Tank Battalion, and achieved the rank of field sergeant.

On April 19, 1953, Dickie was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Beaman at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester. The family lived in Manchester for a short period of time and then moved to Greeley. Five children were born to this union, Daniel, Diane, Dixie, Douglas, and William. Dickie owned and operated Stock Shell Station for 23 years. He then worked for a year at the Battery Factory. Dickie worked for the D.O.T. in Manchester as a mechanic for 11 years until his retirement.

Dickie was a longtime member of the Greeley United Methodist Church. He served on the Greeley City Council since 1967 and was a member of the Greeley Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years. Dickie was also a longtime member of the Greeley American Legion Post #566.

Dickie enjoyed playing softball and was a coach for the Greeley rope pull team. He liked gardening, watching birds, and traveling. Dickie had a strong faith in God and was a supporter of all things related to his community. He was well known for his volunteer work at the cemetery. Most of all, Dickie loved and enjoyed being with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Barbara Stock; four children, Diane (Jim) MacInerney of Peosta, Dixie (Richard) Meyer of Williamsburg, Douglas Stock (friend, Bridgett Robinson) of Ocala, Florida, and William (Susie) Stock of Greeley; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Don (Vernell) Stock of Lithia, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

Dickie was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Daniel Duane Stock in 1979; four sisters, Lavern Robbins, Wyllis Oakley, Regina Behrens, and Juanita Hammond; three brothers, Neil Stock, William Stock, and Harold Stock; and one great-grandson, Leonidus Powell.
