Fred Shaffner, a young man about 24 years of age, living near Millersburg, hung himself in his father’s buggy shed.

Suicide
Fred Shaffner, a young man of about twenty-four years, who lived north west of Millersburg hung himself in his father’s buggy shed early Thursday, of last week. There was no cause for this rash act unless it was ill health. Some time last summer Mr. Shaffner had his spine hurt by lifting logs and has been ever since crippled. The funeral was held at Millersburg last Friday afternoon.

Note: His parents were Henry and Maria Elizabeth Roth Schaffner. Dates on his tombstone in the Millersburg Cemetery is 19 Mar 1874 – 12 Jun 1902, 28 years old.

Fred Schaffner was born in Iowa county March 19, 1874; died at the home of his parents four miles north of Millersburg, June 12, 1902; aged 28 years’ 2 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn their loss a father, mother, four brothers and six sisters. They are nearly prostrated with grief. Every person within the range of their acquaintance extend to them their heartfelt sympathy.

Fred was a boy well liked by all those who knew him best. He was industrious, energetic and gave promise of a useful life; but the hand of disease was laid upon him in such a way as to cause his death in a most startling and unexpected manner.

Funeral services were held at the M. P. church, Millersburg, conducted by W. H. Keyser. It was one of the largest funerals ever assembled in Millersburg, showing great respect for the dead and ministering comfort to the living. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Millersburg.
