Obituary for Susie Rohrer

Susie Rohrer, age 89 of Victor, died on Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, at Brooklyn Community Estates.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the Victor United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Davis officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. Interment will be at Emmanuel Cemetery south of Victor.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor and the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Victor United Methodist Church or to Safe Haven Animal Shelter of Iowa County, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 485, Victor, IA 52347. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family online at www.smithfh.com .

Lila Lee “Susie” Borg was born the daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Ginter) Borg on Jan. 29, 1929, in Davenport, Iowa. She was raised in Davenport, Saugus, Massachusetts, and Victor, Iowa, and graduated from Victor High School with the class of 1946. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

On August 1, 1948, Susie was united in marriage to Donald Rohrer at the Victor Emmanuel Church. The couple was blessed with three daughters, Jeanne, Jane and Soonee, and foreign exchange daughter Beth. They resided in Victor throughout their married lives. Susie was an English and art teacher at HLV Schools. They were members of the Victor Emmanuel Church and the Victor United Methodist Church. Susie was a member of the Iowa Pen Women, Iowa Water Color Society and Society of Experimental Artists. She was also a member of the Victory Public Library Board, a humor columnist for Iowa Agri-News (“Notes from Exit 205”) and a correspondent for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

Susie will be remembered as a talented artist, a woman of strength who overcame many health issues, and for her optimistic “glass is half-full” way of thinking, her quick wit and sense of humor, and her love of family. She took advantage of many opportunities in life, especially traveling. She held a special love for poetry, music, playing cards, teaching and for the care of animals.

Susie is survived by her husband of 70 years, Don Rohrer of Victor; daughters, Jeanne (Jim) Roth of Ames, Iowa, Jane (Brian) Nixon of Clifton, Virginia, Soonee (Robert) Sill of Ames, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Joan (Graham) Nuttall-Stokes of Aptos, California; foreign exchange daughter, Beth (Steve) Uyenco-Shatto of Chicago; and eight nieces and nephews. Susie was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Everett Brandt; and brother, Charles Brandt.
