Funeral Mass for Leonard J. Carney, 74, Parnell, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg. He died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, with his family by his side.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg, where a prayer service will be held at 4 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established for the Parnell Youth Baseball Program.

Leonard Joseph Carney was born July 15, 1943, in rural Deep River, the son of Louis and Genevieve (Dont) Carney. He was a 1961 graduate of Williamsburg High School.

He married Judith Ann Rugg April 25, 1964, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg. He worked as assistant manager for Me Too Foods in Williamsburg during high school. He later was employed by the Iowa County Secondary Road Department as a road superintendent retiring after 30 years.

Carney is survived by his wife, Judy, Parnell; three children: Brett (Jen) Carney, Parnell; Carman (Steve) Meade, Olathe, Kan., and Bartt (Jane) Carney, Centerville; 11 grandchildren; a brother: Marvin Carney, Marengo, and two sisters, Donna Grimm, Cedar Rapids, and Shirley (Dean) Stoddard, Williamsburg, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Pat Carney, and a brother-in-law, Bennie Grimm.
