Mary Constance 'Connie' Pickart, 102, formerly of Norway, died peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at West Ridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at St. Michael's Parish Center, Norway. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, with the Rev. Craig Steimel presiding. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery, Norway. Connie was born to Clarence and Stella Driscoll Disterhoft on Jan. 21, 1916, near Oxford, Iowa. She graduated from Parnell High School and Ottumwa Heights College. Connie married Clifford Pickart on April 20, 1940, in Parnell, Iowa. She later completed her degree at the University of Iowa. Connie was an elementary school teacher, teaching in rural schools in Iowa County, St. Joseph's in Dunlap, a one-room school in Watkins, St. Michael's Catholic School, Norway, and Norway Community School, retiring in 1983.

Survivors include three children, Stella Siver and Andrew (Sandra) Pickart of Cedar Rapids and Thomas (Jill) Pickart of Oelwein; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Pickart; 10 grandchildren, Maria (Chad) Hoefer, Sara (Kyle) Sievers, Michael (Tammy) Pickart, Emily Pickart, Ann (Dan) Klein, Mark (Jessica) Pickart, Katie (TJ) Alshouse, Tony Pickart, Mary Pickart and Micaela Andrews; great-grandchildren, Ryan Hoefer, Noah and Lillie Pickart, Matthew and Lauren Klein, Claire and Reese Alshouse and Lucas Sievers; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Cliff; son, John; and three infant children, Robert Francis, Thomas Joseph and Anne Marie; two grandsons, Matthew and John Andrew Pickart; parents, Clarence and Stella Disterhoft; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne (Jean), Joseph (Ruth), Cecil (Charlotte), DeSales (Evelyn) and Paul (Mary) Disterhoft; sister and brother-in-law, Lucille (Pat) O'Neill; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Lellis (Ray) Orf and Marcella (Jerry) Sonka; brother-in-law, Bert Pickart; son-in-law, John Siver; and dear friend, Seth Weaver.

She was a member of St. Michael's Church, being the religious coordinator for 29 years; a parish council member for six years; lector and Eucharistic minister at Mass and to the homebound; a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, being treasurer for 66 years; Norway American Legion Auxiliary, being secretary for 13 years; Benton County Food Pantry Board, being secretary for many years; and Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She conducted Communion services at Colonial Manor, Amana, for 21 years.

Connie was Teacher of the Year at the Norway Community School in the 1970s. She was PTO president and band booster president. She was a 'KCRG Show You Care' winner in February 2003, in recognition for her many years of volunteer work.

She traveled to many states, as well as to Rome and Fatima. She especially enjoyed trips to Cubs games.

Connie loved sewing, making clothes for herself and her nieces and granddaughters, mending for her grandchildren, crocheting, making tied lounging blankets for gifts, reading avidly, playing cards and working daily crossword puzzles. She was a woman of very strong faith and was an example to others by her passionate love and patience. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren deeply, as well as her many elementary school students. She appreciated all the many acts of kindness that were done for her, and she was a true, devoted friend to all.

She was a resident for her final 10 years at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Cedar Rapids, where she participated in many activities. Her favorites were bingo, spelling bees and Skip-Bo.

Her family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Prairie Hills for the years of kind, loving care that Connie enjoyed there.
