Obituary: Franklin L. Pettibone

Franklin Pettibone was born in the state of New York May 11th, 1829, and died at his home, 6 miles northeast of North English, Iowa, April 12th, 1910. Had he lived he would have been 81 years of age. He came with his parents, to Illinois while yet a young man and after a few years residence in that state the family migrated to Iowa and settled on a farm in Fillmore Township and later he located on the farm where he lived the rest of his life. He was thrice married. On June 3, 1850, he was married to Armilla Carter. The them were born 7 children, 4 sons and 3 daughters. Five of these are living: Mrs. Mary Palmer of Keota; David L. Pettibone of Oregon; Mrs. Ellen M. Wallace and Oscar L.C. Pettibone of this community and Geneva M Burns of Winnipeg, Canada. Two sons died Benjamin on the Jan 5, 1878, and Byron H. On Dec 26, 1887. The mother died Jan 29, 1884. On Sept 20, 1885, Mr. Pettibone was married to Ellen R. Pettibone who died Jan 20, 1886. To this union was one child, a daughter, who died in infancy. On Feb 29, 1888, he was married to Phoebe A.H.Carter who survives him. Mr. Pettibone was one of a family of 8 children, only one of who, Mrs. Sarah Hickey of Nodaway, Mo is living.

He was a man of great energy and action. Whatever he died, he did with his might and was usually successful beyond most men. Through most of his life he was strong and vigorous and when these qualities failed it caused more or less depression of his spirit. He had been breaking in health for 12 or 15 years and for 6 or 8 years he had been practically helpless only attending to chores about his home which, lately he seldom left. He brooded much over his afflictions.

He was must esteemed by his neighbors and everybody spoke of him familiarly and affectionately as "Uncle Frank".

Thirty three years ago he was converted and united with the Church of the Disciples and in the early nineties he transformed his membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church during the pastorate of Rev. G.R. Swartz and was largely instrumental in the construction of the Yankee Point Church.

Besides his wife he leaves five children, 28 grand-children a large number of relatives and a still larger number of friends, all of whom will long miss him and long cherish his memory. His funeral which was largely attended, was as conducted at Yankee Point Episcopal Church by the pastor, Rev. J.E. Corley, on Friday April 15, 1910, and the body was buried in the local cemetery, one mile east of the church.
