Vaughn W. Holmes, 73, of 21 Meadowview Dr., Central City, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from interstitial lung disease. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Prairieburg by the Rev. Wayne Droessler. Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Prairieburg. Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City.
Survivors include his wife, Onalee; their children, Douglas Lawrence and wife Marcia of Marion, Bruce Lawrence and wife Theresa of Marion, Brian Lawrence and Duane Morgan, both of Sacramento, Calif., Cami Lawrence of Alburnett and Mike Lawrence of Alburnett.
Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, Douglas Lawrence Jr., Amanda Lawrence, Clint Lawrence, Cody Lawrence, Carrie Griffith, Casey Lawrence, Molly O'Connor, Brandon DeWitt, Shane Portzline, Jace Pillard, Kara Lawrence, Kassie Lawrence, Colton Lawrence and Kailey Lawrence; six great-grandchildren, Braxton, Dalton, Miah, Mirandah, Hunter and Holdyn; a brother-in-law, August "Dick" Smith; and three cousins, Vickie Miller, Becky Auld and Rick Shaw.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two children, Bradley Lawrence and Brenda Holmes.
Vaughn was born to Harold and Beth Maule Holmes on Jan. 5, 1932, in North English. On May 16, 1964, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Prairieburg, he was united in marriage to Onalee Lawrence. He attended the University of Iowa for two years. Vaughn served on the USS Oriskany during the Korean conflict. He retired in 1991 after 35 years as a letter carrier for the Cedar Rapids Post Office. Vaughn was a member of American Legion Wapsi Post 421 and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Vaughn was an avid golfer. He enjoyed tending to the greens and his Thursday golf league. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Vaughn was mayor of Alburnett for many years until he moved to Central City.
He was a great husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A memorial fund has been established in Vaughn's memory.
