FRED MAHAMMAH, 67, PROMINENT EDUCATOR DIES
Passes Away at His Home In Des Moines Sunday Morning. Was a Native of North English
and One of First Graduates From High School Here. Held State Job Recently.
Fred L. Mahannah, 67, assistant curator of the Iowa state historical department, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at his home, in Des Moines, of a heart attack.
Mr. Mahannah, who lived at 731 Polk blvd. Had been ill Saturday evening but said Sunday norning that he was feeling better. The attack occurred while Mr. Mahannah was taking a mid-morning rest.
He had been ill for eight weeks last spring and had spent three weeks in a hospital.
Mr. Mahannah had attended the meeting of the Iowa Association of Local Historical Societies at Hotel Savory Saturday.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial at Glendale cemetery.
Mr. Mahannah had been assistant curator of the historical department since 1938. He was in charge of state archives.
He was widely known in state educational circles and had been president of the Iowa State Teachers association.
High School Teacher
Mr. Mahannah was born on a farm north of North English, and was one of the first students to be graduated from the local high school.
He was graduated from Cornell college, Mount Vernon, Ia. After his graduation he returned to his home town, North English, Ia. And taught in the high school.
Later, he was superintendent of schools at Rockwell, Iowa for five years and then was Cerro Gordo county superintendent of schools. In 1911, he was appointed state normal training school inspector in the office of A.M. Deyoe, state superintendent of schools.
Other Positions
Mr. Mahannah also was superintendent of the Iowa Soldiers’ Orphans’ home at Davenport. Iowa and superintendent of schools at Monticello, Iowa.
He was appointed assistant superintendent of public instruction when Miss Agnes Samuelson became superintendent in 1927. He served his post until 1938.
Besides his wife, survivors are a brother, A.H. Mahannah, Ames, Iowa and a sister, Mrs. Ambrose McKinstry, North English.
