Margaret Schmitt, 93, of Elgin, Nebraska, formerly of Parnell, passed away Wednesday, Oct.18, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Services were Monday, Oct. 23, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Kevin Vogel officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family. Huffman-Levander Funeral Home, Elgin, was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.huffmanlevander.com.

Margaret Ann “Peggy” Murrin, the daughter of Laughlin Charles and Ann Veronica (Carroll) Murrin was born June 11, 1924 at Parnell. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell, IA. Peggy attended Sugar Hill Pilot 7 from first through fourth grades and then attended Parnell Public Grade and High School graduating from there in 1942. She then attended Ottumwa Height Junior College. Following college, Peggy worked for the Cedar Rapids Block Company, Cedar Rapids, prior to her marriage.

On Nov. 15, 1945 Peggy was united in marriage to Norbert J. Schmitt at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. The couple made their home in Elgin their entire married life. Peggy was a housewife, homemaker, raised the couple’s 15 children, assisted Norbert in his custom farming operation, as well as keeping books for the business. Mr. Schmitt died in 2006

Peggy was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin and St. Boniface Altar Society, in which she held various offices. She was also the bookkeeper for St. Boniface Parish. She was a member of the Scattered Neighbors Extension Club, headed the local Red Cross Blood Mobile, was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and worked on the election board for years. In her retirement years, Peggy and Norbert enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends.

Peggy is survived by 15 children: Jerry (Linda) Schmitt of Camdenton, Missouri, Jim (Kay) Schmitt of Littleton, Colorado, Connie (Joe) Seier of Elgin, Nebraska, Rita Luettel of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Carol Rosberg of Littleton, Colorado, Marg (Gary) Trambly of Hastings, Nebraska, Ray (Lisa) Schmitt of Hesston, Kansas, Patty (John) Thiele of Clearwater, Nebraska, Teri (Monte) Reicks of Petersburg, Nebraska; Joni (Mike) Borer of Omaha, Nebraska, Dave Schmitt and fiancé JaVae of Norfolk, Nebraska, Kevin Schmitt of Kansas City, Missouri, Dwaine (Kathy) Schmitt of Kearney, Nebraska, Steve Schmitt of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Jacquie (Jon) Butler of Kearney, Nebraska; 38 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers, two sons-in-law, a granddaughter and a and grandson-in-law.
