Daniel L. Odem, 78, of Marengo, formerly of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, with burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.

Memorial donations can be made in Dan's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.

Daniel Lee Odem was born June 28, 1939, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Glenn and Myrtle Faye (Walters) Odem. Following graduation from Ottumwa High School in 1957, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving over five years until his discharge. He was united in marriage to K. Jane Lint on Aug. 26, 1967, in Hiawatha, Iowa. Dan returned to school, enrolling at the University of Iowa, where he received his master's degree in engineering in 1970. He was employed by the University of Iowa Department of Physics, associated with Dr. James Van Allen and staff until his retirement in 1997. He then worked for Rockwell Collins until 2004.

The couple had lived in Iowa City for more than 30 years. They moved to Marengo in 2004.

Dan was an avid reader, enjoyed most any outdoor activity with family and friends, and was known to many for his sense of humor and great wit!

His family includes his wife, Jane; their daughters, Angela Wyrick (Lane) of St. Peters, Mo., and Jacqueline Shumaker (Brad) of Ely, Iowa; grandchildren, Daniel Watkinson, Luke Watkinson, Joseph Wyrick, Stephen Shumaker and Lianna Wyrick; sister, Nancy Odem; sisters-in-law, Robin Odem and Vickie Thoenness-Airy; and a brother-in-law, Bradley Lint (Kathleen Uehling).

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard Odem.
