Arthur Jesse Wallace, 91, died on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Hospice of Jasper County's Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Newton.
Friends may start calling after 3 p.m., Wednesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home; where the family will greet friends from 5-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers Arthur's family requests memorials to Hospice of Jasper County, First Presbyterian Church or to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service.
Arthur was a graduate of Williamsburg High School in Williamsburg, Iowa in 1936 and from the St. Louis Mortuary College in 1951.
Together Arthur and twin brother, Albert owned the Wallace Funeral Home, Wallace Brothers Furniture and Floor Covering Store and the ambulance service in Wyoming, Iowa from 1953 until 1963. They owned the Wallace Funeral Home in Newton from July 1963 until selling in January 1984. Arthur continued to work at the funeral home until January 1998. He has worked at the Wallace Family Funeral Home from January 1999 until this past year.
Arthur was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton; he was a past member of the United Presbyterian Church in Newton where he had served as a Trustee, Elder and Deacon. He was also a member of the Newton Lodge No. 59 A.F. & A.M., Newton Chapter 100 Order Eastern Star, Newton Noon Kiwanis Club, where he had 28 years Perfect Attendance, Newton Elks, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, Moose Lodge No. 923, and Pheasants Forever. He was a Lifetime member of the Iowa Funeral Director's Association and a past member of the National Funeral Director's Association. Arthur had also been the Iowa State 4-H Boys Club President in 1937, Iowa County 4-H Youth Assistant in 1949.
Survivors include his son, Gary (Pat) Wallace of Newton; three granddaughters, Heather (Tony) Hiatt of Le Claire, Nikki (Rob) Hartz of Cedar Rapids, and Chantelle Beiner of Newton; his four great-grandchildren, Carly Jesse Hiatt, Elise R. Hiatt, Dylann G. Beiner, and Derek H. Beiner; two sisters-in-law, Helen B. Wallace of Newton and Muriel Wallace of Mason City; his many nieces and nephews and the Reader family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Rea and Lois Mary (Howes) Wallace; wife, Fritzie [Helen Fritz] in 1982; five brothers, twin brother, Albert in 2007, Ralph, Herbert, Robert Wallace and a brother in infancy; three sisters, Caroline Ingles, Irene Sinn, and Dorothy Morris.
