Catherine “Ruth” Price was born June 9, 1919, on the family farm near Brooklyn, the daughter of Ray and Mae Kann Robey. She was raised in the Brooklyn area and was a 1937 graduate of Brooklyn High School. She received her teaching certificate from the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

For several years, she taught at Rural School Number 9 in Warren Township in Poweshiek County. Many of her former students remembered her fondly.

On March 22, 1945, she married Melvin Price, at the United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. They were married for 58 years. She retired from teaching following her wedding and began working together with her husband, for many years, operating a successful farm operation. During this time she was very active with the Farm Bureau.

She was a member of the Victor United Methodist Church, where she volunteered for many activities. She was an active member of the Victor American Legion Auxiliary, a 4-H leader and a volunteer at the HLV School District. She was a strong advocate of a child’s education. She loved flowers, gardening and canning her produce. She was very detailed in many of the things she enjoyed doing.

Price is survived by her daughter, Colleen Van Zee, Holiday Lake, near Brooklyn; her grandson, Adam (Amber) Nowotny, Cedar Rapids; four great-grandchildren, Damien, Aiden, Lily and Osiris Nowotny, all Cedar Rapids; and her sister, Ruby Pelot, Bellview, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Mae Robey; her brother, Ross Robey; and most recently, her son-in-law, Eric Van Zee on February 22, 2017.
