Memorial service for Larry M. Schafer, 73, Marengo, was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at Meadow Hill Christian Church, Homestead. He died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The Rev. Carol Travers officiated at the service. Military honors were performed at the church.

A memorial fund has been established to help defray funeral costs.

Larry Mark Schafer was born Feb. 3, 1943, in Batavia, the son of Lester and Juanita Davis Schafer. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1961 and then attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was on active duty in Germany and Fort Bragg, N.C., from 1964-67. He continued his service to his country with the Army Reserves until 1970. He returned home to Iowa and raised his family. Larry was employed at Farmstead Foods, and when they closed their doors he attended Kirkwood College for re-training. He then was employed with Stoney Creek Manufacturing in Blairstown. Larry was an animal lover and enjoyed his horses, dogs and rabbits.

Schafer is survived by his children, Todd, Oskaloosa; Erika Pride (Greg), Webster City; Doug, Killeen, Texas; Heidi Burggraaf (Eric), Gilman, and Ben, Blairstown; 12 grandchildren, Mariah, Kiah, Jami and Jordon Pride, Logan, Corbin, Benton, and Evelyn Burggraaf, Brayden Simon, Kylie Schafer and Landon Schafer; and his siblings, Janet Hittle, Mesa, Ariz.; Myrna Holcomb (Dennis), San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Doreen Flowers, Mesa, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ronald Schafer.
