Dorothy McBurney, 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at The Woodlands/The Meth-Wick Community, surrounded by her loving family. A visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with services following at 11 a.m.

Dorothy was born May 27, 1926, in Watkins, Iowa, the daughter of Adolph and Helena Schaedlich Geiger. She graduated from Amana High School in 1944, then attended business college in Des Moines.

Dorothy married Edward Alberts. He passed away Dec. 5, 1968. She then married Merle McBurney in 1972, who passed away June 25, 1999.

She was a longtime employee of Quaker Oats.

Dorothy was an excellent seamstress. She made many of her own clothes over the years, and those of her two daughters. She also loved to read. This will be her legacy to her children. She had a great fondness for all animals, giving a loving home to cats and dogs throughout her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control.

She is survived by daughters, Connie (Glenn) Maze of Coralville and Cathie (Joe) Harris of Cedar Rapids; a son, Tom (Lisa) Alberts of Ackworth; a stepdaughter, Sue Travis of Shellsburg; six grandchildren, Chris and Geoff Maze, Paula Vielmetti, Brian Thomas and Maia and Hannah Alberts; and 10 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a longtime friend, Mildred Setzer of Amana.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brothers, Harry and Ray Geiger; and sisters, Helen Gatens and Anna Swick.

The family would like to express its deep thanks to all the staff at The Meth-Wick Community, who had a part in caring for our mother the last decade, with grace and compassion, allowing our mother to retain her dignity. We also want to thank Brook Van Dee, St. Luke's palliative care nurse, for her compassion and guidance through our journey. Lastly, deep thanks to St. Luke's Hospice, especially Kim, for all they did to soften our mother's last days.

Online condolences may be directed to the family at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home's Website under Obituaries.
