Mavis Heishman, 82, Hartwick, passed away peacefully at Brooklyn Community Estate on Dec. 5, 2016. No funeral service is planned. Burial will be at a later date. A gathering of family and friends will be held in the future.

Mavis June Rinehart Heishman was born along with her twin sister, Avis, on April 23, 1934, in Iowa County, the daughter of Clarence and Merle Shedenhelm Rinehart. She graduated from Ladora in 1953.

She married Maynard Heishman (later divorced) and lived in rural Brooklyn. They had three children, Kevin, Jeanne and Tracy. She most recently had lived in Hartwick.

Growing up, she worked mowing yards, babysitting and as a waitress. She played piano and trombone and was a member of a small, scrappy girls basketball team for Ladora, winning the state tournament in 1950. She worked a number of years for General Telephone Company. She loved attending all of her children’s school activities. She enjoyed music, theater, reading, history, refinishing, yardwork, home decorating, antiques and especially her flowers.

Heishman is survived by her children, Kevin Heishman, Brooklyn; Jeanne Morris, Aurora, Colo., and Tracy Heishman, Hartwick; four grandchildren, Jeannette, Michelle, Fred, and Sarah Morris, all of suburbs of Denver, Colo.; her sisters, Marcella (Fess) Parker, California, and Avis (Gerald “Joe”) Fraker, Victor, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Eileen (Elton) Rinehart, Sturgis, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Inez Rinehart, Ireta (John) Daniels, Mervaille Rinehart and Elton Rinehart.
