George, the son of Robert Warmath and Kathryn Cunningham McConnell, was born January 15, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was raised in Milan, Tennessee and was a graduate of Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee. In addition, George attended Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

On June 11, 1958, he was united in marriage to Joan Williams in Hartwick. After his honorable discharge from the service in 1964, the couple lived in Whitehaven, Tennessee, where he was employed as an insurance agent with Metropolitan Life. In 1969, they moved to Hartwick and for 44 years he was associated with McConnell, Park & Gwin insurance agency and later, Stiefel Insurance in Victor. He retired in 2012, and after doing so, he truly missed all the people he had made contact with.

George served on the Hartwick Town Council, the Poweshiek County Sanitation Board, and the board of Hartwick Church, where he was a deacon and treasurer. He attended the Victor Baptist Church and was a member of the NRA and American Legion. For many years, he was active with the HLV Sports Booster Club.

He enjoyed woodworking, golfing and traveling, and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals. He loved spending time with his family, but the most significant event in his life was his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, of Hartwick; four children, Kim (Lynn) Sleeuwenhoek of Hartwick, Karen (Mark) Dursky of Victor, William (Pamela) McConnell of King George, Virginia and Marcia (Joe) Simmons of Victor; one brother, Bob (Mary) Kolwyck of Germantown, Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Josephine Williams of Carbon Cliff, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Derek and Brittany Sleeuwenhoek, Lauren and Anna Dursky, Alyssa and David McConnell and Paige and Peyton Simmons; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert (Hazel) McConnell and Kathryn McConnell; his father and mother-in-law, George and Hazel Williams; and one brother-in-law, Ron Williams.
