Services for John Herman Danker, 83, Marengo, were Monday, Oct. 10, at St. John Lutheran Church, Marengo, with the Rev. Andrew Gray officiating.

Burial with military honors is at the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.

Mr. Danker died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at Marengo Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 20, 1933, in rural Keystone, the son of Bernard and Helene Heitmann Danker. He graduated from the Keystone High School in 1951. John served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, and spent one year in Korea. He married Leona Petersen on Nov. 27, 1955, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Newhall.

John was employed with Thermogas Company for 36 years, in sales and service, and delivering propane. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Wandling-Wendel Post 76. He was a past Jaycees charter member and president.

John served on the Marengo Memorial Hospital Board for 14 years. He directed and coached summer baseball teams, Peewee, Little League, and Pony League, for many years. He loved gardening, playing bridge and following baseball.

Survivors include his wife; two sons Steven (Julie) Danker, Waterloo, and Mark (Sarri) Danker, Fayette; five grandchildren, Whitney, Joshua and Jonathan Danker, Waterloo, and Samuel and Levi Danker, Fayette; and a sister Dorothy Wandling, Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Kenneth and Alfred, and a sister Frances.
