Nancy K. Colson, 80, Brookings, S.D., died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at the Brookings Hospital. Private family services will be held.

Nancy Kay Colson was born on Aug. 1, 1936, in Marengo, the daughter of Ervin and Helen (Underhill) Langlas. She attended country school near Marengo and was a graduate of Marengo High School. She attended the University of Northern Iowa and later the University of Iowa.

She married John Colson Aug. 27, 1955, in Marengo. She stayed at home to raise their four children. They lived in various places, including Lake Park, Garner and Iowa City; Alamosa, Colo., and Bettendorf before settling in Brookings. She spent many hours volunteering at her children's schools for various activities while supporting her husband's career in music at South Dakota State University.

She enjoyed crafts, specifically creating scrapbooks and photo albums for her family. She spent many hours exercising and walking. Over the years she attended many music performances at South Dakota State University. Most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and was able to keep up with them on social media when she couldn't be with them. She was a very generous grandmother, both with her time and unique ability to purchase presents that were perfect for the recipient.

She is survived by her husband, John Colson, Brookings; four children, David (Liz) Colson, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Peter (Nancy Kristofferson) Colson, Sitka, Alaska; Scott (Sarah Merrill) Colson, Alexandria, Va., and Elizabeth (Eric) Utterson, St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Grace and Max, Mika, Maggie and Louis, Henry, Rose and George, and one sister, Sue (Michael) Grace, Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ervin Langlas, Jr
