Funeral service for Hugh E. Owens, 81, Homestead, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. He entered into eternal rest Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

The Rev. Gary Sears officiated at the service.

Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy.

Memorials may be made to Lutheran Interparish School, Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy, or Iowa City Hospice.

Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.klosterfuneralhome.com.

Hugh Edward Owens was born June 9, 1935, in Homestead, the son of Hugh and Mary Briney Owens. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1954.

He married Shirley Martinson Jan. 25, 1958. He was a farmer and raised shorthorn cattle as well as other livestock. He also worked at other various agricultural related jobs. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Homestead MM Collectors Club. He loved taking his 1964 MM 602 (Pea Picker) tractor to shows and parades all over the Midwest. He enjoyed showing cattle and watching his grandchildren show a variety of livestock at the county and state fairs. Hugh especially loved spending time with all of his family and his beloved dog Sadie.

Owens is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children, Hugh Douglas (Sandy,) Oxford; Julie Harriman, North English; Mike (Trilby), Homestead, and Mark (Jeanne), Homestead; 11 grandchildren, Damon Owens (Katie Buswell), Dana (Shaun) Needham, Landon Owens, Trent Harriman, Taylor Harriman, Payton Owens, Cael Owens, Nate Owens, Rebecca Owens (Kody Curtis), Elizabeth Owens and Michelle Owens; four great-grandchildren, Cheyanne and Sydney Needham and Noah and Sam Buswell, and two sisters, Margaret Knapp and Rosemary Pope.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert, and a son-in-law, Terry Harriman.
