Graveside funeral service for Steve Heller, 64, Marengo, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Marengo Cemetery. He joined his dad in heaven on a beautiful sunset evening. He died at his home Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 of a cardiac incident.

The Rev. Andrew Gray will officiate at the service.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.

A memorial fund has been established.

Steve Heller was born March 30, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Wes and Marietta (Seckel) Heller. He was baptized April 27, 1952, by the Rev. Spitz at the old St. John’s Lutheran Church on Hilton Street. On April 3, 1966, he was confirmed by the Rev. Discher at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Court Avenue.

In 1970, he graduated from Iowa Valley High School, where he participated in basketball, football and band. He was also involved in the Iowa County Underwater Search and Rescue Team. Following graduation from UNI in 1974, he pursued scuba diving interests. He enjoyed underwater photography classes and Caribbean trips. Later he attended commercial diving school in Ft. Pierce, Fla. His work took him to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Upon returning to Marengo he worked at Greater Buffalo Press, Kinze Manufacturing and the City of Marengo.

Steve was a soft-spoken man who enjoyed quiet time in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and shared this interest with his children and close friends. He explored culinary interests and enjoyed processing wild game. He also enjoyed family gatherings at his parents’ home on the hill.

Heller is survived by his son, Blake, daughter, Lisa, and mother, Marietta, all Marengo; grandchildren, Maddex and Easton; sister, Lynette (Wilfred) Karsten, Moline, Ill.; nieces Anna Karsten and Rachel (Matthew) Gerhardt, and friend, Melanie Henley.

He was preceded in death by his dad on Aug. 21, 2016, and his grandparents.
