Mark A. Chvala, 59, of Iowa City and formerly of Victor, died on Sunday, September 11, 2016, at his home in Iowa City.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 16, 2016, at St. John's Lutheran Church near Victor with Rev. Stuart Rethwisch, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist will be Marna Mohr. Casket Bearers will be Jeff Gryp, Ed Healey, Steve Huedepohl, Todd Parker, Dave Prather, Jeff Verdeck and Lane Warden. Interment will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery near Victor.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor beginning 12 noon on Thursday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mark Chvala Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home in Victor.

Mark was born on October 22, 1956, in Belle Plaine, Iowa to Adolph and Helen Novak Chvala. He was raised in Hartwick and graduated with the Class of 1975 from HLV High School.

On July 22, 1978, he was married to Marcella Neuhaus in Victor. The couple lived in Victor, where he managed SIP Lumber Company. From 1986 to 2006, he was a sales representative for the Guardian Distribution Company of Cedar Rapids. He was forced into early retirement due to health issues and resided at Reach for Your Potential in Iowa City.

Mark was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Victor Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, dirt track racing, rolle bolle and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

One of his favorite things to do was support his kids, he was always in attendance at their events and was their biggest fan. Spending time with his grandchildren brought him the greatest joy and always gave him the biggest smile on his face.

Survivors include his wife, Marcella Chvala of Victor; his children, Aric (Lacey) Chvala of Vinton, IA, Kyle (Jillissa) Chvala of Marengo, IA and Allison (Jacob) Madren of Grinnell; eight grandchildren, Emma, Piper, Lillian and Violet Madren, Addyson and Colson Chvala, and Lane and Makenna Schanbacher; and one brother, Don Chvala of Center Point, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
