Howard and Mary moved to Appleton in 1953 and he began his forty-year career with Kimberly-Clark. After his retirement, he continued to do consulting work until 2000. He also served on several committees of the Diocese of Fond du Lac, receiving the Bishop's Cross from Bishop Russell Jacobus in 2006. Howard was also active in the Cursillo movement in the Diocese. In retirement, Howard was an active volunteer with the Salvation Army, the Emergency Shelter, Meals on Wheels, and the Warming Shelter; of great importance to Howard was his work with Housing Partnership of the Fox Cities which he began in 1992.
