Joan L. McCurry, 92, of Grinnell, Iowa died on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 16, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Casket Bearers will be Richard Berman, Brynjar Brynjarsson, Chris Collum, Mike Jones, Joe McCurry, Kenny McCurry, Mike McCurry, and Jim Stevenson. Honorary Bearers will be Jeff Jones, Scott Latham, Kevin Lincoln, Jim Markuart, Jerry McCurry, Randy McCurry and Steve McCurry. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning 12:00 p.m. on Friday and the McCurry family will be present at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary "kitchen fund" and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Joan was born on November 27, 1923, in Grinnell, Iowa to William and Gale Hayes Oltrogge. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School. Following her education she taught at a rural school in Westfield, south of Grinnell.

On April 11, 1943, she was united in marriage to Gene H. McCurry in Kohoka, Missouri. The couple lived in Grinnell, where she was a mother of three children and assisted her husband with the operation of their various businesses, the Bowladrome, the Three Elms Café , McCurry's Café and Pioneer Oil Company.

Joan was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Elks Lodge and the Grinnell Eagles Club. She enjoyed socializing with family and friends and recently celebrated her 90th birthday with over 100 family and friends attending the party. Raising her children was paramount to her, and she enjoyed attending their sporting events. The Iowa State Cyclones and the Chicago Cubs were the teams that she cheered on.

Survivors include her children, Jody (Jon) Knapp of Fountain Hills, AZ, David (Susie) McCurry of Naples, FL and Kirk McCurry of Grinnell; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Joe, Sveta, Chelsea and Payton Rose; and one great grandson, Eli.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Faye Beatty; and two brothers, William "Bud" Oltrogge and Jimmy Oltrogge.
