Dorothy J. Freeze was the wife of retired Army Major General James E. Freeze, to whom she was married 64 years. She was born on a farm near Marengo, graduated from Marengo Public Schools and attended the University of Iowa, where she received several academic honors.

She married Sergeant Freeze Oct. 3, 1951. Upon his graduation from Officer Candidate School and commissioning as a second lieutenant, she accompanied him to Asmara, Eritrea. As a young Army wife in Asmara, she accepted an administrative position with the United Nations office, overseeing the Federation of Eritrea with Ethiopia. Subsequent to Federation, she accepted a position in the Office of the Exchange Controller with the Ethiopian State Bank.

Serving with her husband at numerous military installations in the continental United States, Japan, Hawaii and Germany, she moved her household 31 times in 30 years. She always found time to volunteer as a Red Cross nurses aid, assist chaplains in organizing Bible study groups, lead a Cub Scout Den and respond to anyone in need.

In 1982, she and her husband established TFC, a small business professional services firm that provided management, intelligence and operations security support to business and industrial clients. She exercised administrative management over all facets of the firm until retiring in 1997.

Generous by nature and a lady of deep Christian faith, Dorothy personified dignity and grace throughout her life. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, James Owen (Robin); daughter, Suzanne (Kelly Cole); grandson, James Robert, all of northern Virginia; a granddaughter, Heidi (Craig) Colter; three great-grandchildren, of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother, James R. Tompkins, Marengo, and her faithful Norwegian elkhound, Casey.
