A Life Remembered

Garvin Leonard Smith, 76, was born October 18, 1939 in Ladora, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Esther (Meyer) Smith. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Saturday, December 12, 2015.

Garvin attended Lincoln #7 Country School near family farm NW of Millersburg through 5th grade then Millersburg High School, graduating in 1958. He was in the Army Reserves and attended Military Intelligence School at Ft. Meade, MD. Returned to Iowa and attended the University of Iowa for three years, (Business Major).

From 1962 – 1983 employed by Dunn & Bradstreet, managed Cedar Rapids branch from 1971 – 1974, Sales and Marketing Des Moines branch. From 1984 – 2003 employed by Eagle Sign & Advertising until retirement in the fall of 2003.

He loved reading, racquetball, golf, dancing with his wife and daughter and traveling to see his grandchildren in Chicago.

Garvin is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Ellen (Lyda) Smith; beloved daughter, Lisa Lucille (Arthur G. IV) Holstein and grandchildren, Hunter Lucille Holstein and Arthur G. V. “Quin” Holstein, all of Chicago; sister, Sherlyn (Mike) Tobin of Williamsburg; nephew, David (Vicki) Drown of Cedar Rapids; niece, Darcy (Jeff) Blythe of Orange City; other loving relatives and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will greet friends from 10 to 12 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 600 1st Ave. N in Altoona with a Memorial Service to begin at 12 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Christ the King Lutheran Church or Taylor House Unity-Point in loving memory of Garvin.
