Bonnie Hertel, 70

Funeral service for Bonnie J. Hertel, 70, Middle Amana, was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at the Middle Amana Community Church. She died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Church elder Tony Berger officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Middle Amana Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Amana Heritage Society.

Bonnie Jean Hertel was born June 1, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Leonard and Lina Leonhardt Rettig. She received her education in the Amana schools and graduated from Amana High School.

She married Stan Hertel June 18, 1966, at the Amana Church. She continued her education at Iowa State University, the University of Iowa and then went on the University of Minnesota, receiving her bachelor’s degree in home economics. She worked for the Department of Human Services in Louisville and Frankfort, Ky. The couple returned to Amana 15 years ago, following their retirements.

She was an outstanding seamstress and a wonderful cook. She especially loved to shop. She was fond of animals, especially cats.

Hertel is survived by her husband, Stan; one brother, Larry (Wilma) Rettig, South Amana, and one sister, Rosemary (David) Houser, Moatsville, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
