Memorial service for Alice J. Bier, 95, Fresno, Calif., was held Aug. 27. She died Aug. 10, 2015.

Alice Johanna Bier was born Jan. 28, 1920, on a farm near South Amana, the daughter of William and Frieda (Sandersfeld) Schaefer. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead. She worked for an attorney, was Iowa County deputy clerk and also worked in the Iowa County sheriff’s office.

She married Robert Bier, Fresno, on March 26, 1946, and moved to California. She worked for the state of California in the driver’s license department and in disability insurance. She worked for the state for 35 years and retired in 1981.

Bier is survived by sisters-in-law, Esther Schaefer, Marengo, and Lois Schaefer Randolph, Williamsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 1986; her parents; brothers, Ralph Schaefer, Hilbert Schaefer and Victor Schaefer, and a nephew, Joel Schaefer.
