John L. McGarry, 91, of Victor, passed away on Sunday, August 09, 2015, at the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab center.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 14, 2015, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor.

Visitation will from 2:00 p.m., until 7:00 p.m., with the family present at 4:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 13, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor.

Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Victor.

Memorials may be directed to Essence Hospice Care or the American Cancer Society and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347.

John was born October 18, 1923, to James and Dorothy Peifer McGarry on the family farm in Victor, Iowa. He attended country school until the 8th grade, then St. John's Catholic High School in Victor and graduated with the class of 1941.

John married Gerry (Geraldine) Sauer on August 7, 1954, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mechanicsville, Iowa; to this union 5 children were born.

He entered the United States Navy in 1941, and served during World War II holding rank as a Petty officer 1st Class before being honorably discharged in 1946. John spent most of his career operating the family farm; he also held jobs with Amana Refrigeration and Goss Graphics in Cedar Rapids.

In 2008, John went on a group honor trip to Washington D.C, as part of a veteran's appreciation and recognition, this trip held a special place in his heart. John was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and had a passion for coffee anytime of the day. John was a proud member of the American legion and St. Bridget Catholic Church of Victor

John's memory will be cherished by his wife, Geraldine; children, Marie (Joe) LeGrand of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; Tom McGarry of Victor, Cathy (Dennis) Cavner of Bluffton, South Carolina; Bob (Melissa) McGarry of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; Dick McGarry of Davenport; Sisters, Margaret Pope of Victor; Dorothy Nagal of Bellington, Washington; Genevieve Davis of Williamsburg; grandson, Matt Cavner of Bluffton, South Carolina; and granddaughter, Morgan McGarry of New Brighton, Minnesota

John is preceded in death by his parents, Brothers, Edward and James McGarry, sister, Teresa Albert, and grandson Grant McGarry.
