Bertha Gretter, 91

Funeral Mass for Bertha A. Gretter, 91, formerly of Williamsburg and Harper, was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Holy Trinity Parish – St. Mary Catholic Church, Keota. She died Saturday, July 25, 2015, at Manor House Care Center, Sigourney.

The Rev. Charles Fladung and the Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in Holy Trinity Cemeteries – St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Harper.

A memorial fund has been established for Hospice Compassus.

Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Keota, was in charge of arrangements. Tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.

Bertha A. Gretter was born Dec. 13, 1923, in rural Wellman, the daughter of John and Clara (Greiner) Fladung. She attended school in Wellman and graduated from Keota High School. She attended Iowa State University for one year.

She married John Robert Gretter Feb. 11, 1947, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Keota. The couple lived and farmed in the Harper area. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish – St. Mary Catholic Church, Keota; St. Mary Catholic Church, Williamsburg, and the Altar and Rosary Society.

She was also a leader for Girl Scouts and a member of the Harper Women’s Club. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, polka dancing and her grandkids.

Gretter is survived by one daughter, Barbara Jean (Dr. Randy) Blaylock, Sigourney; four sons, Donald J. (Linda) Gretter, Peyton, Colo.; Samuel C. (Cheryl) Gretter, Anthony C. (Pam) Gretter and Kenneth A. (Angie) Gretter, all Harper; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one brother, David (Mary) Fladung, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, John Wynn Gretter; one sister, Dorothy Sisk; a half-sister, Marcella Durian, and a half-brother, Omer Flander.
