Neomi Matthes, 81

Celebration of life service for Neomi N. Matthes, 81, North English, was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the Powell Funeral Home, North English. She died Sunday, May 10, 2015, surrounded by her family, near North English.

The Rev. John DeBoef officiated at the service.

Burial was in the English River Church of the Brethren Cemetery, near South English.

A general memorial fund has been established.

Neomi Norine Gronewold Williams Matthes was born Sept. 29, 1933, near Donahue, the daughter of Clarence Fredrick and Norma Kate (Bluedorn) Gronewold. She attended Buena Vista in Clinton County and Tipton High School.

She had resided in the North English community since 1971. She worked in the laundry and dietary departments at the University of Iowa Hospital. She was a member of Hilltop Chapel, What Cheer, where she taught Sunday school.

She was an avid artist and enjoyed painting, crafts, gardening and her grandchildren. She was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye football fan and also enjoyed following the St. Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings.

Matthes is survived by her children, Rick (Nancy) Williams, Coralville; Candy (Joe) Hohenshell, Williamsburg; Scott (Jessie) Matthes, Riverside; Todd (Lanette) Matthes, North English, and Callie (Lynn) Denison, North English; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; her siblings, ArloAnn Sieck, Center Point; Merlin (Doris) Gronewold, Waterville; Sharon Williams, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Galen “Butch” (Jane) Gronewold, Urbandale.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Cindy Williams; four grandchildren, Gabe Williams, Casey Jo Passer and Matt and Cassie Johnson, and two brothers, Laurence and LaVerne Gronewold.
