SOUTH AMANA -- Shirley Ann Crouse, 69, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in Mercy Iowa City following a brief illness. Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, by the Rev. Morris Hurd. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial: noon Monday, Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb, Ill.

She is survived by three sons, Mike of Sycamore, Ill., Corbin and wife Sherri of North Port, Fla., and David and wife Julie of LeClaire, Iowa; three daughters, Robyn Crouse of Clinton, Wendy Hinman and husband David of Dubuque and Leigh Crouse of Clinton; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition, she is survived by her mother, Mabel Novak of South Amana; a brother, Robert Novak and wife Noelle of Richmond, Va.; and a sister, Linda Fisher and husband Paul of South Amana.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, on May 3, 1976; her father; a sister, Winifred Bertelli; and a daughter-in-law, Martha Crouse.

Shirley Ann Novak was born Feb. 19, 1935, in Elberon, Iowa, the daughter of Wilfred and Mabel Erickson Novak. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1953 and married Frank Crouse on Sept. 11, 1954, at First United Methodist Church in Marengo. The couple lived in DeKalb, Ill., where she was employed as a secretary at Northern Illinois University in the registration and records office and also in food service. After her husband's death, Shirley moved to South Amana. She was employed at University Hospitals in Iowa City as a secretary until her retirement. She was actively involved with the Emerald Knights Drum and Bugle Corps and the Drum Corps International.
