Jonathan Rogers, 56

Celebration of life service for Jonathan “Jon” L. Rodgers, 56, Raytown, Mo., was held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Blue Ridge Christian School’s gym, Raytown. He died Monday, April 14, 2014, at St. Luke’s East, Lee’s Summit, Mo., from complications of multiple myeloma cancer and Type 1 diabetes.

He will be laid to rest at a later date.

Jonathan Lee Rodgers was born Sept. 27, 1957, in Marengo, the son of Charles Douglas and Norma Elaine (Herdlicka) Rodgers. He grew up in the North English and Millersburg areas. He was a 1975 graduate of DRM High School, Millersburg, and a 1987 graduate of Calvary Bible College, Kansas City, Mo. He worked at the Landmark Restaurant and Amana Refrigeration before moving to Raytown.

He married Melinda (Mindy) Evans Aug. 4, 1984, at Blue Ridge Church. He loved the Lord Jesus and devoted over 20 years of his career as a custodian with Blue Ridge Christian School, where his wife also taught and their three children graduated. He was also lead custodian at Lee Summit High School.

He was active with church and serving as deacon and Awana kids club director.

In his spare time, he loved to fish and tinker with cars, from demo derby cars to keeping family and children’s cars running and safely on the road. He also loved to do woodworking, making a beautiful headboard and baby crib.

Rodgers is survived by his wife, Mindy; his sons, Jon-Erick (Megan) and grandson Jonathan Hunter; Matthew (Victoria), Alaina Rodgers and fiance Jesse Bonin, all Raytown; his father-in-law, Mick (Ruth) Evans, Berea, Kenn.; brothers-in-law, Greg (Nancy) Evans, Joplin, Mo.; David (Jessica) Evans, Richmond, Ky., and Jeff (Linda) Evans, Orange County, Calif.; brothers, Charles (Chuck) (Carolyn), Williamsburg; Phillip (Kristy), Millersburg; one sister, Susan (Steven) McCleary Bain, Cedar Rapids; aunts, Marilyn (Ray) Johnson, Tipp City, Ohio; Opal Faas, Cedar Rapids; Louise Danner, Florence Ruff, Marshalltown; Lorene Meek, Toledo; Arlene Strennan, West Des Moines, and uncles, Sam Rodgers Jr., Ottumwa, and Dean (Marilyn) Rodgers, Marengo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister, Linda Kaye; grandparents, Sam and Bertie Rodgers and Sylvester and Vera Herdlicka; uncles, Russell (Fern) Robert, Ronald Gene Herdlicka, James (Helen) Rodgers, Art (Betty) Catherman, Nick Meek, Rolland Danner, Wallace (Lucille) Fiser and Boyd Ruff, and aunt, Millie Rodgers.
