Murlen Vogt, 100

Funeral service for Murlen P. Vogt, 100, Williamsburg, formerly of Homestead, was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. He was called home to the Lord Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.

The Rev. Andrew Gray officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Marengo Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo; The Lutheran Hour or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Murlen Philip Vogt was born March 14, 1914, in Homestead, the son of Philip J. and Katherine Kohler Kuch Vogt. He attended the Homestead school and graduated from Marengo High School in 1932.

He married Gertrude Gesina Sandersfeld Nov. 28, 1940, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead. He was born, raised and farmed the same land his entire life. This farm is now designated a Century Farm. He also worked for the Homestead Feed Mill and did land measuring for ASC.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, where he held several offices. He was on the building committee for the education building and the new church. He was a dartball member and a member of the men’s club. He was also a member of Farm Bureau.

He was loyal to the Iowa Hawkeyes and was also an avid Cubs fan. He especially enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending all the family and school activities, even his own recently celebrated 100th birthday party.

Vogt is survived by his children, Ronald (Rosella) Vogt, Homestead, and Donna (Daryl) Blythe, Williamsburg; a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Vogt, Tiffin; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, Mark Vogt, Homestead; Kerri Vogt, Wheatridge, Colo.; Keith (Sandy) Vogt and daughter Evangeline Vogt, Cedar Rapids; Becky (Darin) Esser, Cedar Rapids; Christine (Jeff) Fluegel and family, Ashley and Logan Fluegel, Janesville, Wis.; Jon Vogt, Tiffin; Dr. Jeff (Darcy) Blythe and family, Paige (Garrett) Fooshee, Derby, Kan., and Nolan and Clayton Blythe, Orange City; Curt (Mary) Blythe, Williamsburg, and family, Trenton (Molly) Blythe, Oak Park, Ill.; Holden (Kelly) Blythe, Austin Blythe (Kiley Ritchie) and Corbin Blythe, Williamsburg; Matt (Robin) Blythe and family, Garrett and Gage Blythe, Williamsburg, and Stacey (Aron) Cremeens and family, Tyler Cremeens, Dillon Blythe, Cole Cremeens and Carlee Cremeens, Williamsburg, and a brother-in-law, Vernon (Esther) Sandersfeld, Homestead.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, in 2011; his parents; one son, Lowell Vogt, in 2002, and one brother, Eldon Vogt.
