Ralph Berstler, 85

Funeral service with military honors for Ralph E. Berstler, 85, Cedar Rapids, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. He died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at his home.

Ralph E. Berstler was born Feb. 25, 1929, in North English, the son of Carl and Clara (Herdliska) Berstler. He married Kathryn McDonald Sept. 28, 1957, in Washington.

He worked for Quaker Oats for 29 years. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He was a member of the Stellapolis Masonic Lodge 391, Williamsburg, for 50 years, and was a member of the I-Hawk Club and an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

He always said, “A short pencil is better than a long memory.”

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather with many friends. He left us with wonderful memories and we feel blessed to have had him in our lives.

Berstler is survived by his children, Thomas (Debra), Valley Center, Calif.; Richard (Sheri), Fairfax; Robert (Janan), Solon, and Jill Berstler, New Hampton; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Delmer (Luella), Cedar Rapids; special friend, OraLee Hollingsworth, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents and two brothers, LeRoy and Russell “Dean.”
