Barbara Torney, 72

Celebration of life memorial service for Barbara M. Torney, 72, Williamsburg, was held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Williamsburg. She died Monday, March 17, 2014, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.

The Rev. James Parks and the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiated at the service.

Burial was at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Osage Cemetery, Osage.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church building fund.

Barbara Marie Torney was born Nov. 4, 1941, in Des Moines, the daughter of Ezra Smith and Besse Lorena (Beard) Calhoon. She graduated from Ames High School in 1959 and earned a bachelor of science degree in geology in 1963 from Iowa State University; a master of science degree in geology in 1983 from the University of Iowa and a master of science degree in environmental science and engineering from the University of Iowa in 1988.

She married Donald Torney Jan. 5, 1963, at the First Baptist Church, Ames. She worked for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as an environmental engineer and for the Howard R. Green Company as a hydro-geologist in the last 1980s and 90s.

She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Williamsburg, and the United Methodist Women.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, traveling to visit relatives and national parks, collecting rocks and fossils, music and making sock monkeys.

Torney is survived by her husband, Donald, Williamsburg; two daughters, Susan Torney, Kemah, Texas, and Linda (Jeff) Wille, Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Sarah, Nathan, Tyler and Kaitlin Wille, and one brother, Clair Calhoon, Walnut Creek, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Max Calhoon.
