Helen Lockridge, 82

Celebration of life service for Helen L. Lockridge, 82, North English, was held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 17, at the Powell Funeral Home, North English. She died Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the English Valley Care Center, North English.

The Rev. Lester Zook officiated at the service.

Burial was in the North English Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Community Church, Deep River.

Helen Louise Lockridge was born Oct. 2, 1931, in Washington County, the daughter of Emmett and Laura (Cox) Smothers. She graduated from North English High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa and William Penn.

She married James Robert Lockridge March 14, 1953, in Sigourney. She taught at the North English Elementary School and later was a custodian at the University of Iowa for 18 years, retiring in 1993.

She lived in the North English community her entire life.

She was a member of the Community Church, Deep River, where she taught Sunday school, vacation Bible school and was involved in the children’s activities.

She enjoyed canning, sewing, reading and traveling but truly loved teaching the kids and homeschooling her own children.

Lockridge is survived by her husband, Jim, North English; four children, Steve Lockridge, Rainier, Ore.; Linda Lockridge, Iowa City; Kay (Steve) Lockridge Harland, Kalona, and Jane Lockridge, North English; a grandson, Tyler Harland; two great-grandchildren, Raevyn and Jep Harland; one brother, Clifford Smothers, Williamsburg, and one sister, JoAnn Davidson, Dubuque.

She was preceded by her parents and four brothers, Arnold Smothers, Richard “Swede” Smothers, Gerald Smothers and Dale Smothers.
