Max W. Miller, 82, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Luzerne died Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Methwick in Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Services will be 10:30 AM Friday at the Christ United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine with Rev. Steven Hubbell officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine. Burial will be in the Ladora Cemetery.

Max was born Feb. 8, 1931, at Iowa City, the son of Weslie and Gertrude Peek Miller. He received his education at Marengo, Conroy and graduated from Blairstown High School. He married Shirley Jean Slaymaker on Dec. 28, 1949, at Victor. He was a farmer and had resided in rural Luzerne prior to moving to Methwick in Cedar Rapids in February of 2012. He was a member of Calvary Methodist Church, Blairstown, and Koszta Church of God. He was also a member of Masons and past Master of the Belle Plaine Lodge and Belle Plaine Optimist Club. He enjoyed hunting pheasant, turkey, deer, squirrel and rabbit, fishing, camping, mushroom hunting, was a longtime Benton County farmer, 52-year Mason, enjoyed rodeo and raised Blue Heeler puppies.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Kathy (Ron) Johnson, Ames, Thomas (Brenda) Miller, Luzerne, Mark (Cathy) Miller, Luzerne, Julie (John) Freeman, Cedar Rapids, Joanne (Doug) Schminke, Belle Plaine, and Matthew (Trisha) Miller, Luzerne; sister, Delores (Marvin) Wickwire; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gould (Barbara) Miller; and sister, Ellen (Guy) Vander Linden.
