Celebration of life service for Elma F. “Bill” Smith, Williamsburg, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. She died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

The Rev. James Parks officiated at the service. Musician was Peggy Wardenburg and selections included “I was There to Hear Your Borning Cry,” “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace.”

Burial was in the North English Cemetery. Casket bearers were John Grolmus, Dean Stoddard, Brian Mullnix, Jerome Fawcett, Eldon Harl and George Mattison.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Williamsburg; the Williamsburg Public Library or the donor’s choice.

Elma F. “Bill” Smith was born Sept. 14, 1916, in Fairfield, Ill., the daughter of Lonzo A. and Ada J. (Shelton) Rogers. She lived in the Williamsburg community most of her life.

She married Lewis N. Smith Oct. 13, 1937, in Ladora. She worked 15 years at the grocery store on the town square and 32 years at Super Value/Williamsburg Foods. She wanted to work until she was 90 years old. She missed her goal by six months, retiring in March of 2006.

Smith is survived by one son, Del (Karon) Smith, Madison, Wis.; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) James, Daniel, W. Va., and Aaron (Carole) Smith, Henderson, Nev.; five great-grandchildren, Lauren Smith, Isaac Smith, Samantha Smith, Lillie James and Steffen James, and two sisters, Neoma Lacy, Vinton, and Marie Faas, Lincoln, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and two sisters, Ethel Jennings and Nadine Gardner.
