Julia McNair, 84

Celebration of life service for Julia M. MacNair, 84, Williamsburg, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg. She was released from Alzheimer’s disease Jan. 17, 2014, in North English.

The Rev. Kip Murphy officiated at the service.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the English Valley Nursing Care Center.

Julia Mercedes MacNair was born July 20, 1929, in the hospital at Williamsburg, the daughter of Ralph H. and Ferne (Chittenden) Matheson. She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Williamsburg High School. She went on to study at the University of Iowa where she graduated with a degree in history with a teaching certificate. She taught for a year in Wellman.

She married James L. MacNair in 1951 and moved east, where they resided in New York and Pennsylvania. She moved back to Williamsburg and later divorced in 1966.

She became a reading teacher at the high school in North English, and later taught civics and reading at Williamsburg Junior High and High School for over 20 years, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, served as a deacon and an elder, was a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Circle and a Bible study group and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a member of P.E.O.

She played the piano, enjoyed crossword puzzles, was an avid reader and a passionate duplicate bridge player who earned Life Master status. She enjoyed travel and the theatre and especially her beloved Iowa state, whose glorious sunsets she liked to photograph.

MacNair is survived by three daughters, Deborah A. MacNair and her partner Shari Wilkins, Denver, Colo.; Christiana (Karl) MacNair Kelman, Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Margaret L. (William) MacNair Jodeit; two nieces, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ralph Matheson Jr. and Donald Matheson; sister, Doris I. Matheson Richardson and one daughter, Alexandra Lee MacNair.
