Carney

Funeral services for L. Luverne Car-
ney, 53, Parnell, were held at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 5, at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church, Parnell. The Rev.
Anthony Conrad celebrated the Mass.
Lector was Leonard Carney, cousin,
Parnell. Servers were Bartt Carney, a
cousin, John O'Brien and Matthew
Donohoe, all Parnell.

Carney died of at University
Hospital, Iowa City, Friday, Sept. 1,
1989. He has been ill for several
months.

Organist Dorothy (Mrs. John J.)
Donahue, Williamsburg, accompanied
soloist William McDonald, North En-
glish, as he sang, "On Eagles Wings,"
"Only a Shadow," "We Remember" and
"Be Not Afraid."

Burial was in the church cemetery.
Casket bearers were William Garringer,
Gary Greiner, John J. Donahue Sr., and
John J. Donahue, Jr., all of Williamsburg,
and Ed O'Brien and Harold Kruse, both
of Parnell.

Honorary casket bearers were Gerald
Carney, Ames; Michael Carney, Den-
ver, Colo., and Melvin Carney,
Shawnee Mission, Kan., all brothers;
John McCune, Williamsburg, Ray
O'Brien and Joseph Lower, both Par-
nell.

Leonard Luverne Carney was born at
Marengo Oct. 8, 1935, the son of
Patrick L. and Verla Septer Carney. He
attended the elementary school and
graduated from Millersburg High
School.

On June 4, 1960, he married Janice
Starks at St. Mary's Catholic Church,
Williamsburg. They lived in the
Williamsburg area and later moved to
rural Parnell.

He was a member of St. Joseph's
Catholic Church, Parnell, and was a
concrete contractor.

Survivors are his wife, Janice; two
daughters, Julie (Mrs. Eldon) Harl,
Williamsburg, and Barbara (Mrs.
Charles) Sandersfeld, Parnell; four sons,
Brian, Rapid City, S. D.; John, Great
Falls, Mont.; Donald, Denver, Colo.,
and Kevin, Charleston, S.C.; four
grandchildren; his mother, Verla Car-
ney; three brothers, Gerald, Melvin and
Michael, and a sister, Luree (Mrs. Paul)
Riha, Vining.

He was preceded in death by his fa-
ther, Patrick, Dec. 8, 1988, and two
brothers, Patrick Leo in 1931 and
James in 1947.
