Harold C. Cooney

Harold C. Cooney, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at his home after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Services: 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Harlan Gillespie. Private family burial: Memory Gardens, Iowa City. The family will hold a visitation on Saturday after 10:30 a.m. in the church parlor. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.

Harold is survived by his wife, Myrna; son, Bill Mason of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters, Kathryn Mason of Hiawatha and Sarah Mason of Cedar Rapids; one grandson, William J. (Stephanie) Mason of Cedar Rapids; five great-grandchildren, Stella and Ella Doss, Justin Mason, Lauren and Liam Mason; and daughter-in-law, Mary Wisehart.

Harold was born June 6, 1934, in Iowa City, the son of Harry and Irene (Tatro) Cooney. He graduated from Iowa City High School attended the University of Iowa, United States Army Signal School, and then Kirkwood Community College in 1982. He married Myrna Sue (Lenoch) Mason on Dec. 21, 1968, in the chapel at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Harold retired in 1991 after working for the University of Iowa as an electronics engineering technician.

Harold was a lifelong maker, collector and restorer of mechanical and electronic equipment. He received the Old Threshers Foundation Patron Award. He was a commercial pilot and led the Explorer Scout Aviation Post 9. He was an amateur naturalist and loved traveling the wilderness areas of North America. Harold also enjoyed sharing his skills and expertise with his family and friends.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Delay the Disease Foundation.
