Obituary for Larry John Knipfer

Larry John Knipfer, 68, of Hills passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2013. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. The luncheon and greeting time will be held immediately following the Memorial Service at the church. The family encourages those who choose to not attend the Memorial Service to join them for the luncheon and greeting time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Knipfer family, where they will be divided between the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Organ Transplant Department and the creation of a new member scholarship for the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Larry was born on April 3, 1945 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Harold and Doreen [DeGroot] Knipfer. Larry graduated from the Southern School of Agriculture in Waseca, Minnesota. After high school, Larry attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where he received his undergraduate degree. He then attended The University of Iowa where he earned his Master Degree. On June 12, 1971, Larry married Sally Walker in Early, Iowa.

Larry worked for the Iowa City School District as a Music Teacher for 38 years and also coached men’s golf at Iowa City High for 16 years. He was involved in many different clubs and organizations including the Barbershop Harmony Society Iowa City chapter, where he had served as the director and assistant director, was past President of the Johnson County Retiree Organization. Larry was also a member of the Pigskin Pickers, Tuesday morning men’s prayer group at St. Andrews, and Hy-Vee men’s breakfast club. In his free time Larry enjoyed feeding birds, golfing with his golf buddies, watching sports, especially the Cubs and Vikings, taking fishing trips up north, and most importantly, spending time with his family.

Larry is survived by his wife Sally, two sons; Ben (Shawna) Knipfer and their children, Samantha Kriz and Anson Knipfer of Iowa City, Chad (Shannon) Knipfer and their children Katie and Jackson Knipfer of North Liberty, two sisters; Carol Roach, Arlys (Jim) Davis, and one brother; Rob (Lourinda) Knipfer.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
