Memorial service for Eleanor B. Close, 94, Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Trinity Episcopal Parish, Waterloo. She died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Sartori Hospital of natural causes.

Inurnment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Parish.

Eleanor Bernice Close was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Iowa County, the daughter of James Calvin and Bernice Fern (Fry) Hartz. She graduated from Hilton High School, Conroy, and Iowa State Teachers College with an elementary teaching certificate.

She married William Frederick Close Jr. Nov. 1, 1941, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He died Sept. 19, 2003.

She taught in rural schools in Iowa County and for 25 years in the Waterloo Community School District at Roosevelt and Lincoln Elementary Schools. After retiring, she was a Golden Apple Volunteer in Waterloo schools.

She was a member of Chapter Z, P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators, Sartori Hospital Auxiliary and Trinity Episcopal Parish, where she served on the vestry and chaired the Altar Guild for many years.

Close is survived by two daughters, Sue Ellen (Robert) Savereide and Ann Close, all Cedar Falls; one son, William F. (Jane) Close III, New Hartford; grandchildren, Marshall (Cindy) Close, Polk City; James (Kerry) Savereide, Fairbanks, Alaska; Carrie (Paul) Hassel, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; Megann (Jason) Tresemer, Cedar Falls; Ed Close, Penuluma, Calif.; Adelle Close, Waterloo; great-grandchildren, Zackary Savereide, Riley Close, Molly Close, Dylan Savereide, Owen Tresemer, Will Hassel, Alexa Zanders, Norah Tresemer and Eva Hassel.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Maurice Hartz and James Hartz.
