Mrs. Sylvester Sherman

Miss Irene Ursula Peet was born on August 29, 1823 at Bristol, Vermont; was educated at the Female Seminary, at Middlebury, Vermont, and in 1847, was married at New Haven, Conn., to Sylvester Sherman, Esq. Of the fruits of this marriage, there survive one son, S. F. Sherman, of Honey Creek, and four daughters, namely, Mrs. W. C. Schultze, of Marengo, Mrs. D. F. Jones, of Berkeley, California, Mrs. Geo. W. Jones, of Lawrence, Kansas, and Mrs. A. C. Jennis, of Port Arthur, Texas.

In 1852, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman went to North Carolina, where for three years he engaged in the mercantile business, and in 1855, they came to Iowa county, locating on a farm in Iowa township, and in 1872, in another in Honey Creek. In 1888, he retired from active business, and removed to Marengo, where he died in 1896. He was active in politics for many years, holding the office of county auditor of this county from 1871 to 1872.

After his demise, Mrs. Sherman continued her residence at the family home, endeared to her by tender memories until failing health drove her to accept the loving care of her child, when, during a long illness the patient sufferer had the care that only the most thoughtful, tender and loving children can bestow.

She departed life on the 24th of this month and tearful and affectionate friends laid her to rest beside her departed spouse on Tuesday afternoon.

She was a lady of refined tastes; was an affectionate and indulgent wife and mother; steadfast friend and neighbor and in all the adversities of her career was patient, gentle, hopeful and serene. As this other of the pioneers goes out, we again turn to the great record they have left, and look forward to the harvest of the years from the seed they sowed, for the growth of our commonwealth. The bereaved family has the cordial sympathy of us all.

Mrs. Irene Ursula Sherman

Mrs. Irene U. Sherman died at the residence of Dr. Schultze, in this city, last Sunday morning, the 24th inst., in the 77th year of her age. She was born August 24th, 1823 at Bristol, Vermont. She was educated at the Middlebury Seminary for ladies and in 1847 married Sylvester Sherman, Esq. Of the children of this marriage, Fred, a son, Mrs. Dr Schultze, Mrs. Dr. Jones, Mrs. Dr. Jennis, and Mrs. D. F. Jones survive the parents.

In 1852 they removed to North Carolina where they engaged in business. In 1853 they came to Iowa county and remained here the rest of their of their lives.

Mrs. Sherman was a sister of H. B. M. Daniels, of Troy township.

She was a lady of excellent social and domestic traits, and well beloved by all who knew her. In her life she did her part well. She is spoken of as a sweet lady who saw the good in life and in others, was kind as a neighbor, thoughtful and indulgent as a wife and mother. There are many hundreds of people who in almost half a century of her life amongst us will feel a personal loss in her taking off, even in the fullness of the years of a long life.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from Dr. Schultze's residence to the Odd Fellows Cemetery, whither she was followed by such of her family as could be here, and many sorrowing friends besides.

She was one of the oldest families of the county and a particular interest attaches to the lines of all such. She was one of the pioneers who came in the full vigor of young womanhood, to build up a home, and she did well.

Her bereaved children have the sympathy of the entire community.
