Frances Van Nevel, 78

Funeral service for Frances J. Van Nevel, 78, Victor, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Victor. She died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn.

The Rev. Brian Shepley officiated at the service.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Victor.

Memorials may be sent in care of Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347.

Frances Jeanne Van Nevel was born Sept. 28, 1934, the daughter of John and Mildred (Keefe) Wentland, Grinnell. She was raised on the family farm near Hartwick. She graduated from Hartwick High School in 1953. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Bridget Catholic Church.

Following graduation, she was employed as a telephone operator in Cedar Rapids.

She married Donald J. Van Nevel May 21, 1955, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Victor. She was a joyful, active housewife who devoted herself to raising her five children. In her younger years, she was active with sewing and cooking for the family. Later in life she enjoyed several part-time jobs including working at the Victorian Inn and Welcome Home.

She treasured holiday gatherings with the family and attending all of her grandchildren’s sporting events. She enjoyed all sports on television, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Her passions were playing cards for hours, laughing and competing in euchre, bridge and pepper games with her friends and family.

She was devoted to St. Bridget Catholic Church and active with St. Bridget’s Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a participating member of the Victor American Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hats.

Van Nevel is survived by her husband of 58 years, Donald; five children, Peggy and Dan Weisskopf, Victor; Steven and Vicki Van Nevel, Brooklyn; Patricia and Damon Carter, The Villages, Fla.; Pamela and Todd Emerson, Belle Plaine, and Scott and Lanette Van Nevel, Terrebonne, Ore.; sisters, Kay and Wayland Herzberg and Marcella Van Nevel; brother, Mike and Dixie Wentland; grandchildren, Matthew and Stacia Weisskopf, Brett and Danielle Weisskopf, Chad Weisskopf and fiance Vanessa Houser, Elizabeth and Dennis Clark, Dustan and Cecelie Van Nevel, Grace and Colton Opperman, Tara and Josiah Mullins, Jamie and Nick Wille, Kyle and Megan Bazyn, Nolan Van Nevel, Julia Van Nevel and Renee Van Nevel; 16 great-grandchildren, Drew, Derek, Dylan, Devon, Cale, Belle, Laynie, Katie, Shyla, Alayna, Raelyn, Hunter, Alivia, Siena, Sophia and Sydney.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Jason Weisskopf; one sister, JoAnn Miller, and one brother, John Wentland Jr.
