Milton Heitman, 89

Funeral Mass for Milton G. Heitman, 89, Marengo, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. He died Monday, July 29, 2013, at Marengo Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo.

A memorial fund has been established.

Milton George Heitman was born May 6, 1924, in Sumner Township near Marengo, the son of George Martin and Rosa Kathryn Conrad Heitman.

He married Mary LaVonne Hildman Jan. 23, 1947, in Waterloo. He farmed in the area for many years and also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo; the Knights of Columbus; a member and past president of the Iowa County Cattlemen Association and belonged to multiple collector associations and clubs.

He was an avid collector but his most prized collection was his family and the many friends he accumulated over his lifetime. He always looked forward to his Wednesday morning coffees with his country church friends.

Heitman is survived by three sons, George, Altoona; Leon and Joni, Cedar Rapids, and Dwight and Denise, Marengo; five daughters, Angela Heitman, Maquoketa; Susan and Terry Fultz, Ames; Stephanie and Ray Manning, Iowa City; Mary Pat Heitman and Pat Coyle, Iowa City, and Renee and Don Drost, Pella; 11 grandchildren, Cole and Jessica Heitman, Iisha Heitman and Troy Martin, Arianna Heitman, Danielle and Cerissa Fultz, Kent and Abby Heitman, Heather and Steve Alford, Andrew and Brittni Heitman, Megan and Caleb Albertsen and Ty and Lauren Drost, and five great-grandchildren, Tenley Heitman, Ayden and Braylon Drost and Teagan and Buffy Jordan.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Lavonne, in 2010; his parents and three siblings, Wanda Moser, Glova Sheda and Wilbur Heitman.
