Leah ‘Minnie’ Maas, 101

Funeral service for Leah W. “Minnie” Maas, 101, Williamsburg, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 26, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg.

She died Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.

The Rev. Carl Cloeter officiated at the service.

Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Homestead.

Memorials may be made to Lutheran Interparish Schools, Williamsburg.

Leah Wilhelmina Maas was born May 25, 1912, in Deep River, the daughter of William and Mary Rank Behrens. She graduated from Deep River High School in 1929 and received her teaching degree from Iowa State Teachers’ College, Cedar Falls.

She married Erwin John Maas Aug. 3, 1933, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Victor. She worked at Killian’s Department Store, Cedar Rapids, as a clerk and model and assisted her husband on the farm while raising her daughters. She later worked at Ben Franklin as a store clerk and a secretary at Maas Real Estate and Schanz Basket and Broom Shop, West Amana.

She was active in her community and always willing to help others. She served as a 4-H leader for two years, was treasurer of the Ladies Aid at St. John’s, Homestead, and later was treasurer for St. Paul Women’s Guild, Williamsburg.

She also was a reader to preschool children. She enjoyed needlework, embroidering dresser scarves for relatives and friends and made quilts, one for every grandchild. She enjoyed her friends and played bridge until a month prior to moving to the nursing home.

Mother was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was strong in her faith and loving to many. She will be dearly missed by all. The family wishes to thank all of Minnie’s friends and the Highland Ridge staff for all the care and support given during her failing health.

Maas is survived by her daughters, Lillian Mae and Bill Ficken, Cedar Rapids, and Kathleen Ann and Gary Gable, Snohomish, Wash.; five grandchildren, Gary and Sally Ficken, Cedar Rapids; Debbie and Bill Bills, Cedar Rapids; Gary Brian and Jill Gable, Boise, Idaho; Lisa Gable, Snohomish, Wash., and Laura Gable Tufts and Joshua, Seattle, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Brittany Ficken, Maddie Ficken, Sophie Ficken, Megan Bills, David Bills, Nick Gable, Britton Gable, Anna Gable, Brayden Ballman, Amalia Tufts and Cade Tufts, and one sister, Margaret Bohstedt, Williamsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her siblings, Esther, Marie, Walter, Mabel, Carl, George, Henry, Florence and Ella.
