George Ehrmann, 90

Funeral service for George F. Ehrmann, 90, Amana, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at First Presbyterian Church, Marengo. He died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

The Rev. Gerald Rife officiated at the service.

Burial was in the West Amana Cemetery with military honors.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice or First Presbyterian Church, Marengo.

George F. Ehrmann was born May 4, 1923, in West Amana, the son of Fred and Ida Schoenfelder Ehrmann. He attended school in Amana and graduated from Amana High School in 1941. He attended night school, taking many management classes.

He married Ruth L. Meyer April 24, 1948, in Cedar Rapids.

He served his country honorably during World War II in the U.S. Army. He served in the field artillery forward observers group. He was awarded three bronze battle stars serving in the Battle of the Bulge in the Bastone area where he was injured and received the Purple Heart. He and his four brothers all served in the armed forces during World War II.

Upon his return from the service, he returned to work at Amana Refrigeration as a production manager. He retired in 1989 as manager of quality assurance.

He was an active 63-year member of First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, where he served as an elder. He was a member of the Elks Club in Cedar Rapids; the American Legion, the VFW, the Amana Heritage Society and also served on the Amana Boy Scout Committee.

He was director of the North Iowa County Red Cross for 18 years, which then merged with the Cedar Rapids Grant Woods Chapter. He tremendously enjoyed the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., with his son Jeff as guardian.

He was an avid follower of sporting events. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Elmcrest Country Club. He enjoyed reading, playing cards and loved to take care of the yard and flowers around his home. He especially enjoyed visiting his children in Bettendorf and Monterey. During his 50 yeas of employment, George touched the lives of many people and will be dearly missed by all.

Ehrmann is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth; one daughter, Debra, Marina, Calif.; one son, Jeffrey and Barbara, Bettendorf; two grandsons, James and Kelly, Bellevue, Wash., and Timothy, Dubuque, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Henrietta Schwarting, and four brothers, Alfred, Walter, Roy and Richard.
