Gene Smith rite set Friday

MILLERSBURG - Gene Leslie Smith, 55, Millersburg, died Monday, June 27, 1988, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Christiansburg United Methodist Church, west of Ottumwa on old Highway 34, with the Rev. David Anderson and the Rev. Larry Riegel officiating. Burial will be in Chisman Cemetery near the church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home in North English and from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church west of Ottumwa. The casket will remain at the funeral home. A memorial has been established.

Smith was born April 4, 1933, in Fairfield, the son of Orval and Ada Whittaker Smith. He attended school in Fairfield and was a member of the Nazarene church. On Dec. 3, 1961, he married Alice Louise Long in Lancaster, Mo. He lived in the Ottumwa and Williamsburg communities before moving to Millersburg in 1966.

He worked 17 years at the Iowa County Secondary Road Department and worked for more than 10 years as dispatcher for the Iowa County Sheriff's Department. He was an active member of Millersburg First Responders and served for many years as a civil defense worker. He served on the Millersburg City Council, was a city water commissioner, and served as mayor pro tem. He retired from county work in August 1987 because of deteriorating health.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Darwin L. of Williamsburg, Darren L. of Millersburg; a brother, Paul R. of Avon Park, Fla.; a sister, Wanda Ross of Fairfield; a number of nieces and nephews. His parents, two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
