Celebration of life service for Duane “Whitey” A. Grant, 78, Sigourney, formerly of Fremont, was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Copper Lantern, Sigourney. He died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at the Hospice of Serenity House, Oskaloosa.

As was his wish, his body has been cremated.

Fremont Funeral Chapel, Fremont, was in charge of arrangements.

Duane A. Grant was born Monday, March 12, 1934, in Newton, the son of Leslie P. and Ethel B. Nevins Grant. He graduated from Sully High School in 1952. Following high school, he attended a tech school in Minneapolis to become a railroad telegrapher.

June 28, 1954, he married Mary Schroeder at Bear Creek, Wis. He then went to work for Chicago-Northwestern Railroad, Wisconsin, until 1955, when the couple moved to Des Moines where he worked for Rock Island Railroad. In 1967, while still working for Rock Island, they moved to Marengo, and bought a bar named the Grant Ranch and operated it for several years.

In 1977, they moved to Keswick and bought a bar also named Grant Ranch. They owned and operated both restaurants until 1980 when they moved to Harper and ran the Harper House Restaurant.

In 1981, they started working for Motel 6 in several different states and did that until 1996. From 1996 to 2000, they traveled around the country in their fifth wheel camper and worked wherever they were needed, mostly in restaurants.

In 2000, they retired and moved to Fremont, where they lived until 2009 when they moved to Sigourney.

He enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, drinking beer and flower gardening.

He was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church.

Grant is survived by his wife, Mary, Sigourney; two sons, Scott and Sally Grant, Webster, and Steve and Dorita Grant, Ollie; one daughter, Sherry Fisher, Sigourney; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one sister, Bonnie and Jim Bryant, Fremont.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
